Apple's iPad: The End of the Internet as We Know It?

STEVE INSKEEP, host:

One part of the economy that seems to be doing fine is sales of just about anything labeled as the latest product from Apple.

The iPad went on sale on Saturday. Apple's tablet computer is being hailed as a revolutionary device, but it may also bring a revolution to an end.

NPR's Laura Sydell reports on how the iPad limits some of the freedom associated with the Internet.

LAURA SYDELL: On its Apple Web site they make it seem as if holding the iPad is like a religious experience.

(Soundbite of Apple.com)

Unidentified Man: When you have a multi-touch display this large, you feel like you're actually holding the Web right in the palm of your hand.

SYDELL: But that's not how Paul Sweeting sees it.

Mr. PAUL SWEETING (Analyst, GigaOM.com): With the iPad, you have the anti- Internet in your hands.

SYDELL: Sweeting is an analyst with GigaOM Network who has concerns about the way Apple controls everything on its device.

Mr. SWEETING: It's not an open platform where you can create a lot of content, or other people can create a lot of applications and content that you can then access and use and incorporate into what you're doing.

SYDELL: The iPad is being marketed as an alternative to laptops and netbooks. But on most computers, you can put anything on it you want. The iPad is just like the iPhone - every piece of software and every app must be approved by Apple.

Jonathan Zittrain, a Harvard law professor, says with the iPhone, Apple has shown that it's willing to censor ideas it doesn't like. During the presidential election, Apple blocked a political app.

Professor JONATHAN ZITTRAIN (Internet Law, Harvard Law School): Called Freedom Time - and it actually just simply counted down the days, hours, minutes and seconds until President Bush would be out of office, regardless of who his successor would be.

SYDELL: Zittrain worries that if the iPad really becomes popular, both entertainment and computing, other companies will imitate its closed system.

Analyst Sweeting thinks many of the major media companies would love to see computers discourage people from searching the open Web for content.

Mr. SWEETING: I think the media companies will leap at this, because what it offers them is the opportunity to essentially re-create the old business model, wherein they are pushing content to you on their terms, rather than you going out and finding content, or a search engine discovering content for you.

SYDELL: The iPad does have an Internet browser, but it won't be possible to download unauthorized software or to view sites that use Flash — the technology that animates most visual content on the Internet.

But people waiting in line this weekend to buy an iPad didn't seem bothered by Apple's restrictions. In fact, many like Damen Brown prefer it.

Mr. DAMEN BROWN: When you have the more open systems, there's more of a risk of there being less quality control and a lot of garbage apps.

SYDELL: And it isn't like there's a shortage of apps. The iPhone has more than 100,000 available, and there are already more than 1,000 just for the iPad.

Jennifer Childers likes Apple's gatekeeping.

Ms. JENNIFER CHILDERS: It's not being controlled so much, because every idea's gotten through except for things that are like pornography, or some other things that I wouldn't be looking at anyway.

SYDELL: There is one big competitor that's likely to try and create a device that will offer up major competition to Apple's iPad: Google. The search giant profits from an open environment. But its Nexus One Android phone hasn't been as appealing to consumers as Apple's iPhone.

Analyst Sweeting says Apple's limitations make its products feel safer.

Mr. SWEETING: Apple is offering you a gated community where there's a guard at the gate, and there's probably maid service, too.

SYDELL: As more consumers have fears about security on the Internet, viruses and malware, they may be happy to opt for Apple's gated community.

FED: Gorgon no threat to environment: Ferguson

FED: Gorgon no threat to environment: Ferguson

By Julian Drape

CANBERRA, Aug 23 AAP - There's "no way" the $50 billion Gorgon LNG project off the
West Australian coast poses any threat to the environment, federal Resources Minister
Martin Ferguson says.

But he also admits it's not really his place to make that call, with Environment Minister
Peter Garrett officially in charge of environmental approval.

The yet-to-be developed project - expected to create 6,000 jobs at its peak - will
underpin a major massive expansion of liquefied natural gas (LNG) production across Australia.

Gorgon partner ExxonMobil has already signed a $50 billion gas contract to supply Chinese
energy giant PetroChina over the next 20 years.

"There is no way the environment is at risk," Mr Ferguson told Network Ten on Sunday,
before quickly adding "the environmental considerations are not my considerations".

"It is an entirely separate process in the hands of the minister for the environment,
Peter Garrett," he said.

"He will make a decision in due course."

Mr Garrett has said he'll make his position public on the Barrow Island-based project this week.

The economic clout of the development has some fearing that the environmental examination
will be a whitewash.

But on Friday Mr Garrett denied that was the case.

"I am under no pressure whatsoever in relation to this project other than to do my
job as a regulator properly," he said.

A number of endangered species could be threatened by the development.

"Barrow Island has been dubbed `Australia's Ark' for its unique range of endangered
species, with 24 species and sub-species preserved on the island, many of who are extinct
or endangered on mainland Australia," Australian Greens senator Rachel Siewert said last
week.

Endemic species on the island include the spectacled hare-wallaby, the Barrow Island
golden bandicoot, the Barrow Island mouse and the Barrow Island burrowing bettong.

On Sunday, Mr Ferguson said the environment minister had been assessing the Gorgon
project at arms length for an "extended period".

"A hell of a lot of work has been done environmentally and from a development perspective
to get the project to this point," the resources minister said.

Mr Ferguson also denied Canberra's decision to grant a visa to exiled Uighur leader
Rebiya Kadeer, whom Beijing regards as a terrorist, would effect future trade deals with
China.

"In terms of our relationship with China it's business as usual.

"We are a resources and energy rich nation. China wants to do business with us."

Fed:Australians want leaders to be part of the solution:Swan

CANBERRA, Dec 9 AAP - Australians want their leaders to be part of the solution, not
part of the problem, Treasurer Wayne Swan says.

The latest Newspoll, released Tuesday, shows support for the governing Labor party
jumped four points since the last survey to 59 per cent - its best result in six months
- while the coalition is languishing at 41 per cent.

"Opinion polls come and go. What really counts in the end is whether people assess
that you are pursuing the national interest," Mr Swan told the Fairfax Radio Network.

"We have been solely focussed during this global financial crisis on pursuing the national
interest and the politics of that comes last by a long, long way as far as we are concerned."

Kevin Rudd's rating as preferred prime minister has also risen three points to 66 per
cent, while Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull's standing has dropped two points to 19
per cent, his worst result since being elected Liberal leader in September.

Mr Swan said people want their leaders to lead and tackle challenges head on and that
is what and the government have been doing.

"Malcolm Turnbull and his team have been entirely negative about the economic security
strategy, the bank guarantee and so on," he said.

"I don't think that's the picture being appreciated by the public who want their leadership
to be part of the solution not part of the problem.

"Increasingly Malcolm Turnbull is part of the problem."

WA: Govt unveils plan for Perth Commonwealth Games bid

PERTH, Aug 5 AAP - The West Australian government has announced a plan to bid for the
2018 Commonwealth Games to be held in Perth.

Premier Alan Carpenter says the Departments of Sport, Recreation and Tourism will conduct
a feasibility study into a Perth bid.

Mr Carpenter made the announcement at the site of the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth
Games in Perth at Perry Lakes Stadium.

"We're already spending the money to build a brilliant new international stadium and
a multi-purpose sports facility," Mr Carpenter said.

"We're already building a replacement for this facility here with basketball capacity...

a netball centre (and a) rugby centre.

"We're already doing the work," he said.

The Commonwealth Games Association is due to make a decision on the 2018 host city in 2011.

But Mr Carpenter says he wants to have the Perth bid organised by the beginning of next year.

Mr Carpenter said the Victorian government reaped additional economic benefits from
the Commonwealth Games in 2006 valued at $1.6 billion.

He says the cost to WA taxpayers would be a lot less because the infrastructure is
already being built.

SA: Drivers to be forced to carry licences in SA

AAP General News (Australia)

SA: Drivers to be forced to carry licences in SA

ADELAIDE, Feb 11 AAP - South Australian drivers who don't carry their licences while
on the road will soon face a $100 on-the-spot fine.

The state government is drawing up legislation to provide for the penalty and close
a loophole used by some drivers to escape other traffic fines or penalties.

At present, only provisional licence holders are required to carry their licence while
driving. This means drivers stopped for other offences can give a false name to escape
penalties.

Road Safety Minister Carmel Zollo said the rule change would prevent people from cheating
the system.

"It is about helping us reduce serious and repeat traffic offending in our state," she said.

Police have endorsed the proposed new law with Assistant Commissioner Grant Stevens
saying it would help officers identify those who should not be on the roads.

"The proposed legislation will assist patrols in establishing the identification of
drivers at the time they are pulled over and reduces the ability of people to provide
false information," he said.

"It needs to be remembered that people who have been disqualified from driving have
generally committed a serious road safety offence and should not be on our roads for very
good reasons.

"Others may endeavour to drive outside their licence conditions, which can also add
safety risks for other road users.

"The obligation to carry a licence makes it more difficult to disregard those restrictions."

The state government said Queensland and Victoria were considering similar legislation.

Qld: Indon ship salvage bid could be hampered by rain

Qld: Indon ship salvage bid could be hampered by rain

By Gabrielle Dunlevy

BRISBANE, Aug 24 AAP - Torrential rain could hamper efforts to salvage a 35-metre Indonesian
sailing ship grounded on a south-east Queensland beach.

The Arung Samudera was on its way to Sydney for next month's APEC forum when it encountered
the storm that has been lashing the Queensland coast.

The sailing ship remains at Inskip Point, where its crew of 18 were forced to abandon it.

They are staying at nearby Rainbow Beach, where they were joined by an Indonesian naval
attache last night.

Maritime Safety Queensland officers were due to inspect the Arung Samudera this morning,
to assess damage before planning a salvage mission.

But the continuing deluge could block those efforts.

Rainbow Beach has set a new local rainfall record, receiving 713mm of rain in the 24
hours to 9am (AEST) today.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, this was more than three times the previous
record total of 216mm for the whole month of August set in 1998.

Flash-flooding has cut roads and closed schools in the area.

Indonesian embassy spokesman Dino Kusnadi said the sailors still hoped to make it to
Sydney in time for APEC.

"It's still within the target of attending the APEC tall ships festival, but first
of all we have to assess the damage of the ship, as one of the rudders was damaged," he
said.

"These are navy personnel. They are accustomed to these conditions, wet weather and
storms, but they are happy to be on dry land and waiting it out."

The ship had dragged its anchors and its rudder and centre board had broken before
it ended up on the beach.

NSW: Teenager punches taxi driver in the face

SYDNEY, Feb 11 AAP - A taxi driver has been punched in the face while stationary at
traffic lights, in the latest act of violence against Sydney cabbies.

The 44-year-old driver was stopped at a red light on Bunnerong Road at Matraville about
1.55am (AEDT) today when a group of male teenagers approached the car and asked to be
taken to the city, police said.

When the driver asked the youths if they had money to pay for the fare, one of the
youths punched him in the face, breaking his glasses.

The driver suffered facial wounds and was taken to hospital, police said. He was later released.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the assault to come forward.

The incident is the latest in a spate of attacks on Sydney taxi drivers, including
the death of Youbert Hormozi, who was beaten and left for dead on a street in Canley Heights

ONLINE RECRUITMENT: Head Resourcing in private cloud.

Edinburgh-based recruitment consultancy Head Resourcing is aiming to reduce costs by 20% and its carbon footprint by 80% by moving its IT infrastructure to a private cloud.

Managing director Gordon Adam told Recruiter that the company will move its back-up and disaster recovery, email exchange and recruitment database to the cloud in that order. "In a month's time the aim is that we will have no servers on site," he said, explaining that this is where the carbon and cost savings will come from, alongside support and maintenance, which in future will all be included in its monthly fee to cloud provider Lumison.

Head Resourcing supplies both contract and permanent IT and business change talent to financial services and corporate clients, and also has a large international medical division, Head Medical, which supplies doctors from Europe to Australia and New Zealand. It also recently opened a second office in Leeds.

One of the main drivers for the move was the need to increase the resilience of its IT set-up, having grown from 31 staff in 2008 with a turnover of #10.2m to 50 employees in 2011 and an estimated turnover of #50m. At the end of last year, Adam said a hard drive failed and it highlighted the firm's IT vulnerabilities.

A consultant recommended the private cloud approach, which appealed to Adam who had had concerns about cloud computing in the past. "Our database and data are our Crown Jewels and I didn't like the idea of putting them somewhere in the world in the big cloud," he said. "This offers a kind of halfway house. The data is still down the road in the UK but we no longer have to worry about servers and the costs. Lumison has been our internet service provider for 10 years, so we know and trust them."

While the main driver has been resilience, Adam said the cloud will also provide faster and more straightforward access for his consultants who work at home and from the Leeds office. "We've also talked about an international office and this would make that a doddle from an IT perspective," he said.

Dr Aydin Kurt-Elli, chief operating officer at Lumison, said it expects to attract more recruiters to the private cloud who have "high-service and uptime" needs and who also want scalable platforms to support their growth.

"Public cloud services that are generally available remain problematic for mid-sized and growing organisations, particularly those with security and compliance requirements that require due diligence and transparent operating practices," he said, adding: "At the application layer, private cloud service can cost 20-30% more than public cloud services. However, you are getting integrated services across virtual local area networks (VLANS), with traceability, diligence and full 24/7 UK-based technical support."

With debate about the pros and cons of public and private clouds in the IT world, recruiters need to thoroughly research both options if they are looking at the cloud and make sure they understand the costs. "Remember that on the public cloud, you only pay for the computer resources you actually use, whereas with private cloud you're paying to reserve capacity for maximum loads, even when it's not in use," said Phil Wainewright, president of EuroCloud UK, the industry body for software-as-as-service and cloud vendors. "It's a false comparison if you calculate the public cloud cost of keeping the same load running for the whole month because you would never do this in practice."

He admitted that if you want integrated VLANs, onshore support staff, telephone helpdesk and other enterprise-grade services, it will cost more than the "bargain-basement" commodity public cloud services but it is worth shopping around. "Those options do exist and you can get them along with the scalability, flexibility, continuous improvement and pay- as-you-go economy of public cloud," he said.

TRO Learning Debuts Single-Topic PLATO Courses.

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 23, 1999--

The same proven PLATO courses used successfully in schools

throughout the world will soon be available

in single-topic CD-ROM and downloadable formats

TRO Learning, Inc. (Nasdaq:TUTR) announced today it will begin offering single-topic PLATO(R) courses in October. Initially, 66 individual PLATO titles will be made available on CD-ROM. Later in the month, the courses will be available for immediate purchase and download at the company's e-commerce store on the PLATO Web site at www.plato.com. Course topics will include reading, math problem solving, mathematics, applied mathematics, writing in the workplace, applied science, and vocabulary building. Prices will range from $30 to $150 per course. This new single-topic product offering will enable TRO to directly target teachers, home users, and small rural schools - markets largely untapped by the company to date.

These PLATO courses are the same proven courseware used by millions of learners in thousands of schools throughout North America and the United Kingdom each year. Select PLATO curricula have been broken into topic-specific courses to provide teachers and parents with access to high-quality educational software to help their students succeed. PLATO success stories abound -- from helping individual learners reach their fullest learning potential to helping educators prepare students for success on standardized tests and state-mandated graduation requirements (www.plato.com). Recent independent evaluations at Lakeland Sr. High School (Florida), Lawrence Central High School (Indiana), and Forest Grove High School (Oregon) statistically document PLATO's effectiveness in raising test scores (www.plato.com/ed/results/second.html).

In commenting on the debut single-topic PLATO courses, G. Thomas Ahern, senior vice president of sales and marketing, said, "Current market indicators show that single-topic course purchases are accelerating in schools. We wanted to be responsive to the desire of teachers to supplement and augment classroom instruction, as well as to complement the PLATO core-competency curricula for our current clients. In addition, we feel this offering will provide parents with an option to purchase proven, high-quality educational courseware that is reasonably priced for the home."

William R. Roach, chairman of the board, president and CEO, commented, "All of us at TRO Learning are excited about the impending release of PLATO single-topic courses. This is a major step to expand the accessibility of PLATO to all learners. These courses offer the same preassessment, tutorial, problem solving, and mastery-based approach as our comprehensive curricula, but by individual topic area. The type of products in a single-topic format currently available on the market is predominantly "edutainment," providing little educational value. Unlike those products, PLATO tracks the learner's progression through the course tutorials and problem-solving activities until the material is mastered.

"Throughout the next year," Roach continued, "we will add additional titles from our existing PLATO courseware library, as well as new products currently under development. We fully expect to have between 120 and 150 individual titles by the end of out fiscal year 2000. These titles will be sold through educational catalogues, including our own and third-party publications; our telesales organization, which we have been expanding during the last months; targeted third-party direct sales channels; and, our e-commerce site at plato.com."

Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, John Murray, added, "This new range of products enables us to increase revenues from within our core markets, as well as adding revenues from previously untapped and emerging markets. We are very excited about the opportunity this new single-topic product line and additional distribution channels offer us. Our expectation is that revenues from this effort will increase gradually throughout fiscal 2000, and then make a more significant contribution going forward. We also anticipate being able to create a more evenly spread revenue stream throughout our fiscal year given the lower price point, planned growth of the distribution network, and new market audiences."

TRO Learning is the developer and marketer of computer-based PLATO products and services. With PLATO revenues of over $40 million, TRO Learning, Inc. is a publicly held company traded as TUTR on the NASDAQ-NMS. Offering more than 2,000 hours and 10,000 learning objectives of comprehensive academic and applied skills courseware designed for adolescents and adults, PLATO Learning Systems are marketed to middle and high schools, colleges, job training programs, correctional institutions, military education programs, and corporations. The PLATO Learning System is delivered via networks, CD-ROM, the Internet, and private intranets.

TRO Learning has domestic offices located throughout the United States, and international offices in the United Kingdom, and throughout Canada. TRO Learning has international distributors located in Malaysia, Puerto Rico, Singapore, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. The company's Web site addresses on the Internet's World Wide Web are www.tro.com and www.plato.com

NTT COM TO LAUNCH NEW DATA CENTER IN MALAYSIA.

(Full text of statement. Contact details below.)

MEDIA RELEASE PR45340

NTT Com to Launch New Data Center in Malaysia

TOKYO, Japan and CYBERJAYA, Malaysia, July 4 /Kyodo JBN-AsiaNet/ --

NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) and its wholly owned Malaysian subsidiary, NTT MSC Sdn. Bhd. (NTT MSC), announced on July 4 that NTT MSC will begin construction of the new Cyberjaya 3 Data Center in July, aiming to launch commercial operation of this Tier III-ready facility by June 2012.

Located within Cyberjaya, the Cyberjaya 3 Data Center will join NTT Com's Cyberjaya 1 and Cyberjaya 2 data centers in meeting the expanding needs of Southeast Asian customers. It will offer high-quality, low-cost services based on the NTT Com Group's strict global standards aligned with those of global organizations such as the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), The Uptime Institute, Inc. (TUI) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc. (ASHRAE).

"By leveraging on the key strengths of Malaysia, we will offer customers a Tier-III-ready data center at a low total-cost-of-ownership." said Fumitoshi Imaizumi, President and CEO of NTT MSC. "Malaysia offers cost advantages, well-developed infrastructure, a large talent pool and good governmental support for infrastructure development. Such strengths have propelled Malaysia into the position of one of the world's top-three outsourcing destinations."

The facility will feature redundant systems for commercial power supply, cooling, uninterruptible power supply, power generator and power distribution, plus robust systems for fire and flood prevention. It is expected to be certified under the Green Building Index (GBI), Malaysia's green rating index for buildings, as an environmentally friendly data center that employs renewable-energy technologies, including solar panels, double-walled structures for improved insulation and recycled rain water.

Built with modular architecture for flexible expansion, the facility will offer convenient on-site office space, a rarity among local facilities, as part of its total disaster recovery solution. Full-time professional support will be provided by NTT MSC's multilingual team for the total management of customer networks and servers.

NTT Com has been offering data center services since 2002 through NTT MSC based in Cyberjaya, the hub of the MSC Malaysia (formerly Multimedia Super Corridor) initiative. Malaysia's relatively low incidence of earthquakes, tsunami and other natural disasters, as well as low electricity rates, make this an ideal location for disaster recovery and offshore relocation.

Customers of the new Cyberjaya 3 Data Center will receive the added benefit of extra-low-latency, extra-reliable services when the Asia Submarine-cable Express connecting Malaysia, Hong Kong, Japan, the Philippines and Singapore starts up in 2012. Customers in Malaysia will enjoy high-speed, large-capacity Internet access via NTT Com's global IP backbone and Arcstar Global IP-VPN. Service will be supported with abundant POP available at the Cyberjaya 3 Data Center, enabling customers to directly connect to the backbone without access lines or worries about network costs.

Empire Interactive Redefines the Boundaries of Golf Simulation With The Golf Pro Featuring Gary Player( 7)

Intuitive Mouse Drive(TM) Swing System and High-Speed Precision Animation Mark

Major Advancements in Golf Simulation Genre

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Empire Interactive(R), a worldwide publisher and developer of innovative interactive entertainment, today announced that it has teamed up with legendary golfer Gary Player for The Golf Pro, the first in a series of realistic golf simulation games designed to appeal to both the games player and the golfer. Taking advantage of a radical new swing control system, The Golf Pro treats avid and armchair golfers to exciting rounds at two of the world's most challenging and picturesque courses, while providing valuable tips and tutorials from Gary Player, one of the world's top ranked golfers and winner of nine major championships. The Golf Pro will release on a four CD-ROM set beginning in April 1998.

As host of The Golf Pro, Player leads a series of 18 interactive lessons covering everything from game fundamentals to techniques for improving specialized shots -- such as how to hit the perfect chip or time a killer drive. For users wanting more personal attention, Player is also featured in the game's Play with the Pro(TM) option, where he assesses all aspects of a user's game as each shot is taken and provides valuable tips and techniques for successful shot-making.

The first in a planned series of golf simulation games from Empire Interactive, The Golf Pro represents a major development in the way golf is played on the home computer. Traditionally, golf simulations have used an effective -- but unrealistic -- button-clicking method to control the golf

swing. Empire's new Mouse Drive(TM) system closes the gap between computer golf and the real game by allowing a single, seamless swing that mimics a real golf shot. A wide range of shots can be accomplished with the highly-intuitive Mouse Drive system -- a low drive into the wind, a long pitch into a fast green, or an explosion shot from deep pot-bunker 20 yards from the pin -- all can be achieved with the flick of a wrist.

"There's only so much you can do with the traditional click-click-click system," said David Pringle, project manager of The Golf Pro for Empire Interactive. "With the Mouse Drive system, you're using a lateral mouse movement to draw the club back and forth, so you have a wider range of shots for a more accurate portrayal of a true golf swing. After using our Mouse Drive system, few players will wish to return to the traditional method."

The Golf Pro features 21,000 frames of high-speed animation and more than 90 swing variations, generating the most realistic golf simulation to enter the popular genre. Unlike competing products, graphics are fast loading and render a consistent visual flow of the on-screen action. When a player takes a shot, the graphics move in time with the mouse-controlled swing, eliminating a delay in action. Additionally, with each shot the player's stance is accurately positioned on the screen, significantly improving on the standard center-screen viewpoint.

The heart of any golf simulation is the courses that you're able to play. The Golf Pro will launch with two major course licenses, including St. Mellion International, one of the world's most beautiful courses set in the English countryside to the design of Jack Nicklaus, and Hilton Head National, Gary Player's personal masterpiece and one of the premiere golf resorts in the US. Together, the courses comprise 36 challenging holes of golf. Based on detailed ground surveys, each course is pre-rendered with painstaking accuracy to deliver the most accurate and attractive computer visualization of a golf course yet achieved.

Three different types of gameplay are featured in The Golf Pro, including MatchPlay and StrokePlay competitions, and Stableford matches against top professionals as they play actual rounds on the game's featured courses. A genuine handicap system allows players to progress through different levels of play -- beginner, amateur and professional -- and accurately charts a user's success. As a player's handicap improves new competitions become available. Additional features of The Golf Pro include a 5,000 word 'TV-style' commentary that follows the action and gives detailed analysis as each shot is taken.

Empire Interactive plans to release additional add-on courses and an Internet play enhancement allowing multiplayer head-to-head and tournament play via LAN, modem and ISP connections. With the full Internet gameplay system, players will be able to link up for a host of interactive tournament modes, also planned for release within the current year.
