Fed: UN told to take tough stand on WMD

CANBERRA, Feb 23 AAP - The Australian government today called on the United Nations
to take a tough stand against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

The Security Council should do more to promote and defend WMD non-proliferation standards,
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said.

"I believe there should be a UN Security Council resolution on WMD non-proliferation
which would require states to criminalise proliferation, enact strict export controls
