SA: New factory to produce turrets in SA
ADELAIDE, Aug 4 AAP - The defence division of the giant US manufacturing group General
Motors is to set up a plant in Adelaide to produce turrets for armoured personnel carriers.
The $80 million deal will provide up to 100 new jobs and was secured by South Australian
Premier John Olsen during his current trade mission to the United States.
The turrets are fitted with cannons and navigation equipment and are valued at about
$1 million each.
The Australian Army has already bought 100 and is poised to order a further 150.
The Adelaide factory will also produce turrets for Canada and New Zealand.
Mr Olsen told the Adelaide Advertiser that convincing General Motors to move its fabrication
and regional assembly plant to Adelaide was a major coup for the state's defence industry.
"It sends a message that SA is truly the defence state of Australia," he said.
