Qld: New laws close party loophole

Would-be political parties in Queensland will now have to submit detailed information
about members.

State Attorney-General MATT FOLEY says an amendment to electoral laws approved today
applies to any group seeking to register as a political party in Queensland.

The amendment requires the submission of member application forms, evidence of the
acceptance of the applications, evidence that members are properly registered and a list
of "associated entities" of the party.

Mr FOLEY says the "associated entities" clause will enable the Electoral Commission
to check the actual organisation that each member has applied to join.

He says the amendment is to protect Queensland voters and prevent a repetition of the
circumstances under which PAULINE HANSON'S One Nation was fraudulently registered as a
political party in Queensland.
